OpenAI's $250m Deal

Plus GPT-5 may never release...

Welcome back, AI’ers!

Friday’s Top Story: OpenAI, makers of ChatGPT did not copy Scarlett Johanssen’s voice.

In May 2022, OpenAI put out a casting call for voice actors to provide a human-like voice for ChatGPT but did not explicitly ask for a Scarlett Johansson imitation.

The voice in question, named "Sky," was recorded by a professional actress, not Johansson. OpenAI had discussions with Johansson in September 2023 about potentially joining as an additional voice, but she declined.

While Johansson was "shocked and angered" by the similarity of Sky's voice to her own, OpenAI maintained that it was not an imitation and was recorded by a different actress using her natural speaking voice.

The actress who voiced Sky stated that the backlash "feels personal" as it's just her natural voice, and she was well-informed about voicing an AI assistant.

  GPT-5 Not Releasing?

Right now, we are in the GPT-Next era. The next major jump was supposed to be in GPT-5, but some speculate that it may be called something else.

Remember, the “o” in ChatGPT-4o stands for omni, so it’s probably safe to assume that the next era will be all about omni models.

An "Omni" model is a language model that can handle multiple modalities or types of data inputs and outputs in an integrated manner. The term "Omni" comes from the Latin word meaning "all" or "every"”

So, in essence, an "Omni" model like GPT-4o aims to provide a more unified and versatile AI system that can understand and generate different forms of data, mimicking how humans perceive and communicate across multiple modalities.

Whatever the next era is, we know it’s going to blow GPT-4 out of the water.
