AI ON MY MIND

Happy Tuesday,

Elon Musk is escalating his rivalry with OpenAI, this time taking aim at Apple with the threat of a lawsuit. He alleges the tech giant manipulates its App Store rankings to suppress his AI chatbot, Grok, in favor of ChatGPT.

The accusation puts a spotlight on the immense power wielded by mobile gatekeepers in the booming AI app market.

By the way, I've been getting questions about how AI works in practice, so I'm launching a separate newsletter that dives deeper into real business applications and practical advice. [Click here if you're interested].

TODAY’S TOP STORIES

Musk's Antitrust War

The Recap: Elon Musk is threatening to sue Apple, accusing the company of an "unequivocal antitrust violation" for allegedly rigging its App Store rankings to favor OpenAI's ChatGPT over his own AI chatbot, Grok.

Unpacked:

  • Musk claims Apple’s editorial choices and alleged ranking manipulation make it impossible for any AI besides OpenAI to top the App Store, an action he calls an "unequivocal antitrust violation."

  • However, Musk's claim has been challenged, as China’s DeepSeek AI briefly took the top App Store position from ChatGPT in January, showing other AI apps can reach the number one spot.

  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman fired back, highlighting a report that Musk built a system to specifically amplify his own posts on X, suggesting a double standard in platform manipulation.

  • Bottom line: This legal threat escalates the battle between major AI players for distribution and user access. It highlights the immense power Apple wields as a gatekeeper in the increasingly critical AI app market.

The Chip War's Next Move

The Recap: The US-China chip war is intensifying as China pushes back against Nvidia's H20 chips. Meanwhile, the Trump administration is floating a controversial deal to allow sales of a scaled-down version of Nvidia's far more powerful Blackwell chips to China.

Unpacked:

  • President Trump has signaled he is open to letting Nvidia sell its advanced Blackwell system to China if its performance is reduced by 30% to 50%, a major shift from past export curbs.

  • In response to US restrictions, China is reportedly discouraging the use of Nvidia's H20 chip and accelerating its push for domestic alternatives, with companies like Huawei developing their own AI processors to fill the gap.

  • The new policy is underpinned by an unprecedented agreement where Nvidia and AMD give the US government a 15% cut of their revenue from certain chip sales to China in exchange for export licenses.

Bottom line: This signals a pivot in US strategy, trading some technological advantage for market access and direct revenue. This transactional approach could reshape global tech competition and further motivate China’s campaign for chip self-sufficiency.

MY FAVORITE AI TOOLS

Relevance is my favorite AI tool right now (even more so than N8N).

Here’s why:

It’s an AI agent building tool that doesn’t require you to build out the logic using nodes. Instead, you use natural language to build out these agents. But the best thing imo is that you can build AI Agent teams.

Like agents talking to each other completing a goal until its done. It’s nuts. No other tool on the market is doing this. You have to check it out.

MORE STORIES

Everyone's a Developer Now

The Recap: Vercel has launched v0.app, an AI tool that generates fully functional applications from a single text prompt. This new platform empowers non-technical users to build apps and helps experienced engineers speed up their development process.

Unpacked:

  • The tool goes beyond basic code generation by planning work step-by-step and automating fixes and design improvements.

  • It can perform internet searching and provide citations, allowing it to build with up-to-date information and context.

  • Vercel is using a token-based pricing model, which reflects a broader industry shift towards more sustainable financial structures for AI services.

Bottom line: This development dramatically lowers the barrier to creating software, enabling more people to bring their ideas to life. For existing developers, tools like this act as a powerful co-pilot, automating tedious tasks and accelerating project timelines

Tesla's Dojo Supercomputer Hits a Dead End

The Recap: Elon Musk has confirmed Tesla is shutting down its custom-built Dojo AI supercomputer project. Musk described the ambitious effort as an "evolutionary dead end" as the company pivots its AI and self-driving strategy.

Unpacked:

  • The supercomputer was developed in-house with the specific goal of training Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) software.

  • Musk explained the decision was made after it became clear that all development paths were converging on a new approach, internally dubbed "AI6".

  • The project's shutdown also involved tough personnel choices, indicating significant staff changes related to the strategic shift.

Bottom line: This move highlights the immense difficulty and cost of creating specialized AI hardware, even for a well-resourced company. It suggests that more versatile, scalable AI infrastructure is currently winning out over highly customized internal projects.
