Elon Musk’s xAI to Develop New Supercomputer in Memphis

Elon Musk's AI startup, XAI, plans to build a massive supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee. The multibillion-dollar project, dubbed the "Gigafactory of Compute," will be the largest investment by a new-to-market company in Memphis history.

• The supercomputer will house 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPU chips, the most powerful AI processors currently available, to run its own AI training and testing for its chatbot Grok.

• XAI currently rents about 16,000 H100 chips from Oracle Cloud.

• Musk and his XAI team have been working closely with Memphis officials since March to establish the data center facility, with a target completion date of fall 2025.

• The city is offering tax breaks and other incentives to secure the project, which is expected to be a major economic catalyst for the region.

Stable Audio Open - An Open Source Model for Audio Samples and Sound Design

Stability AI has released Stable Audio Open, an open source text-to-audio model that can generate up to 47 seconds of high-quality audio samples, sound effects, and production elements from text prompts. The model is ideal for creating drum beats, instrument riffs, ambient sounds, and foley recordings for music production and sound design.

• Stable Audio Open allows users to fine-tune the model on their own custom audio data, enabling personalized audio generation.

• The model was trained on royalty-free audio data from Freesound and the Free Music Archive to create an open model while respecting creator rights.

• Unlike the commercial Stable Audio product which generates full songs, Stable Audio Open specializes in shorter audio samples and production elements.

Meta faces call in EU not to use personal data for AI models

Meta is facing 11 complaints in the EU over its plans to use personal data to train AI models without explicit user consent, which could violate EU privacy laws.

• Advocacy group NOYB argues Meta's updated privacy policy would allow it to access users' personal data, including old posts, private images, and online tracking data, to develop its AI tech.

• NOYB founder Max Schrems says Meta is trying to claim a "legitimate interest" to override data protection rights, despite previous EU court rulings against this for advertising purposes.

• The complaints were filed with data protection authorities in several EU countries, and violations could result in fines of up to 4% of Meta's global turnover.
