Apple releases first preview of its long-awaited iPhone AI

Apple has unveiled the first preview of Apple Intelligence, its highly anticipated suite of AI features designed to enhance Siri, generate emails and images, and organize notifications. However, the release is currently limited to registered Apple developers in the iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1 betas, with a public launch expected later this year.

Researchers have developed a machine learning model called "Mirai" that uses traditional mammograms to predict breast cancer risk

The study developed a deep learning model called Mirai that can predict a woman's 5-year risk of developing breast cancer based solely on a mammogram, outperforming existing methods.

• Mirai achieved a 0.76 concordance index (C-index) in predicting 5-year breast cancer risk on the MGH test set of 25,855 mammograms, higher than radiologist assessment and prior deep learning models

• The model generalized well to external test sets from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan, with C-indexes of 0.78 and 0.79 respectively

• Using a risk threshold of 2.6%, Mirai identified a high-risk cohort with 37-42% sensitivity and 85-89% specificity across the test sets
