Apple releases first preview of its long-awaited iPhone AI
Apple has unveiled the first preview of Apple Intelligence, its highly anticipated suite of AI features designed to enhance Siri, generate emails and images, and organize notifications. However, the release is currently limited to registered Apple developers in the iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1 betas, with a public launch expected later this year.
The preview includes an updated Siri interface, improved Siri capabilities, AI-generated summaries for messages and mail, and a text generation service called Writing Tools.
Some features, such as image creation and ChatGPT integration, are not yet available but will be rolled out over the next year.
Apple Intelligence will only be compatible with iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and newer models, potentially driving a significant wave of upgrades.
Google is using AI in an attempt to improve traffic flow
Google's AI is taking on traffic jams in a new pilot program aimed at optimizing traffic light timing to reduce gridlock.
Google is collaborating with the city of Boston, the 4th most congested city in the US, to accelerate the AI traffic light initiative
The program leverages artificial intelligence to analyze traffic patterns and adjust stoplight timing accordingly.
As a leader in AI, Google is well-positioned to make a real impact on urban traffic flow if the system proves effective.
Researchers have developed a machine learning model called "Mirai" that uses traditional mammograms to predict breast cancer risk
The study developed a deep learning model called Mirai that can predict a woman's 5-year risk of developing breast cancer based solely on a mammogram, outperforming existing methods.
Mirai achieved a 0.76 concordance index (C-index) in predicting 5-year breast cancer risk on the MGH test set of 25,855 mammograms, higher than radiologist assessment and prior deep learning models
The model generalized well to external test sets from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan, with C-indexes of 0.78 and 0.79 respectively
Using a risk threshold of 2.6%, Mirai identified a high-risk cohort with 37-42% sensitivity and 85-89% specificity across the test sets
