TODAY’S TOP STORIES

💻 Google’s new generative AI video model is now available

Google has launched Veo, its advanced AI video generation model, in private preview on Vertex AI platform, beating OpenAI's Sora to market with the capability to create high-quality 1080p videos from text or image prompts.

The model can generate videos lasting over 60 seconds and includes safety features like invisible digital watermarking to prevent harmful content creation.

Google DeepMind developed this technology with an advanced understanding of natural language and visual semantics, ensuring the generated content closely aligns with user prompts.

  • Veo can create videos using either text prompts or existing images, including AI-generated ones from Google's Imagen 3 model.

  • The system produces consistent and coherent footage where people, animals, and objects move realistically throughout shots.

  • Major companies like Mondelez International and Agoda are already using Veo to create marketing content8.

☢️ Meta jumps aboard the nuclear-powered data center bandwagon

Meta has announced an ambitious plan to secure nuclear power for its data centers, seeking proposals from developers to build 1 to 4 gigawatts of nuclear capacity in the US, with operations targeted to begin in the early 2030s.

The company is willing to share early development costs and commit to purchasing power once the reactors are operational, showing flexibility in location as long as the power supports both their data centers and surrounding communities.

This move follows Meta's earlier unsuccessful attempt to build a data center near an existing reactor and joins other tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon in pursuing nuclear power solutions

  • Meta's February 5, 2025 deadline for initial proposals demonstrates their urgency in securing nuclear power capacity.

  • The company's approach allows for both traditional nuclear plants (around 1 gigawatt) and smaller modular reactors (SMR).

  • Tech companies' recent nuclear investments mirror their early support of renewable energy developers, potentially signaling a nuclear renaissance.

⛔️ Hugging Face CEO has concerns about Chinese open source AI models

HuggingFace CEO Clement Delangue has expressed serious concerns about Chinese open-source AI models, particularly regarding their censorship of sensitive topics and potential cultural influence on Western technology.

Chinese AI models, while performing strongly in tasks like coding and reasoning, have faced criticism for censoring topics like the Tiananmen Square massacre, with companies being required to "embody core socialist values".

The situation highlights a growing tension as Chinese AI rapidly advances, with HuggingFace's own platform now featuring Alibaba's Qwen2.5-72B-Instruct as its default model.

  • Chinese AI companies face governmental pressure to implement censorship, creating inconsistent behavior across different models

  • HuggingFace predicts China will lead the global AI race by 2025

  • Some Chinese models like QwQ-32B actively censor sensitive topics, while others like Qwen2.5-72B-Instruct appear more open
