Facebook Has An AI Problem

Hey, AI’ers. Did you hear about the "Willy Wonka Experience" in Glasgow, Scotland?

It resulted in significant disappointment and led to police being called by furious parents who felt they had been scammed.

The actors were given scripts containing nonsensical AI-generated content…and get this: the scripts did not mention chocolate!

This fits perfectly with today's subject of AI and scams, so let’s get into it.

It’s Election Year And…

Facebook Has An AI Problem

Facebook has an AI problem.

Take a look at this image.

Can you tell that it’s AI-generated? As of writing this, it has 11 thousand likes, 404 comments, and 957 shares.

Look at the comments:

Take a look at this one now.

Look at the comments:

We can find countless other images that are just like this.

They are AI-generated, with thousands of likes and comments from people who believe these images to be real.

Now add in presidential elections, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Remember the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Facebook found itself at the center of a controversy over its role in the spread of misinformation and fake news.

The platform's struggle to address these issues has been ongoing and multifaceted, involving internal policy changes and public scrutiny.

Especially with an older generation that has less technical ability and is more gullible online.

Meta has announced plans to label images created by AI across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

This initiative aims to inform users when they are viewing photorealistic content that has been generated using AI technologies.

The labels, such as "Imagined with AI," are applied to images created using Meta's own AI image generator as well as content generated with other companies' tools.

But still, this is a problem.

As AI advances, images and videos will improve, and those who don’t know it’s AI may fall into scams.

Moreover, it’s not just AI images and video that you need to be wary of; it’s also audio.

Recently, a 59-year-old woman lost approximately $1,700 USD to an AI voice scam when she received a call from someone who convincingly mimicked her nephew's voice.

The caller, claiming to be her nephew based in Canada, spun a tale of urgent financial need, prompting her to transfer the money to assist him.

This incident is a stark example of AI voice fraud, where scammers use AI technologies to generate audio that closely resembles a person's voice, making the deception more convincing.

So, how do you protect yourself and your loved ones from the future? You need to pay close attention to the details.

For example, if you zoom into the image of fake Santorini, Greece, you’ll notice the people in the background are disfigured. They don’t have faces, and their bodies are morphed.

The image of the bee cake is too perfect. There are no imperfections, and the cake's texture is not realistic.

It’s essential to investigate if something feels off. There are often clues that will tell you whether something is AI.

It’s a skill that you and others will need to learn.

Because the reality in the future will depend on your ability to discern whether something is AI-generated or not.
