Elon Goes After OpenAI
Plus how to edit images in ChatGPT
Welcome back, AI’ers!
Friday’s Top Story: Elon Musk claims Tesla is boosting compensation for its AI engineers to combat aggressive recruiting and massive offers from OpenAI, calling it the "craziest talent war" he has ever seen.
Musk wrote on X that Ethan (referring to Tesla’s computer vision chief Ethan Knight) was going to join OpenAI, so it was either xAI or them. They have been aggressively recruiting Tesla engineers with massive compensation offers and have unfortunately been successful in a few cases.
The battle between Elon and OpenAI continues.

✨ Editing Images in ChatGPT
ChatGPT released inpainting last week; since then, we’ve been playing around with it.
We must be honest; it's a bit clunky, but it is cool to see that OpenAI hasn’t given up on its AI image generation tools.
In today’s tutorial, we’ll explain how to use the editing feature in ChatGPT.
Start by going to ChatGPT and ask it to generate an image.
In our case, we asked it: Please generate an image of a sign that says "Hello World" retro 1960s style
It came up with this
Next, click on the image. This will bring up a screen that has additional options. Click on the painting icon tool in the top bar.
You’ll then see a circle. The circle is the inpainting tool, which allows you to decide which parts of the image you want to edit.
For example, if we wanted to change or remove the text “World,” we could drag the circle over the text.
This will select the area.
Now, we can enter what we want to change the text in the dialogue box.
Note: This function is hit or miss and still needs a lot of improvements.
We opted to ask it to remove the word “World,” and it did so.
Viola! We think this feature is a step in the right direction for OpenAI.
However, we will likely continue using other AI image-generation tools like MidJourney and Leonardo.
AI IN THE NEWS
OpenAI’s enterprise value skyrocketing…
OpenAI is seeing surging demand for the corporate version of ChatGPT, with the number of users signed up for ChatGPT Enterprise more than quadrupling from 150,000 in January to over 600,000 as of April 2024.
📫️ The Details:
OpenAI's Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap stated that 2024 "will be the year of adoption for AI in the enterprise" and that the company is seeing "tremendous momentum" with the enterprise product.
However, OpenAI faces growing competition in the enterprise AI market from companies like Anthropic, Cohere, and its own investor, Microsoft.
To meet demand, OpenAI is looking to expand its workforce of 1,200 employees and secure funding to establish its own chip manufacturing capabilities, as it says there is not enough global supply to meet the "nearly exponential demand" for AI training hardware.
🤔 Why it matters:
The rapid growth of ChatGPT Enterprise demonstrates the surging corporate demand for advanced AI tools, which OpenAI is aiming to capitalize on as it competes with other major players in the enterprise AI space.
Anthropic's Claude AI gains powerful tool integration capabilities…
Anthropic's Claude AI model can now interact with external client-side tools and functions. This allows users to equip Claude with custom tools to perform a wider variety of tasks.
📫️ The details:
Claude is capable of interacting with external client-side tools and functions, enabling users to provide Claude with custom tools to expand its capabilities.
Anthropic has announced that tool use is now in public beta, and users can access this feature by including the "anthropic-beta: tools-2024-04-04" header in their API requests.
The tool use feature allows Claude to assess the user prompt, decide which available tools would be helpful, construct a properly formatted tool use request, extract the tool input, run the code, and return the results.
🤔 Why it Matters
This new tool use capability for the Claude AI model represents a significant advancement, as it allows users to extend Claude's functionality by integrating their own custom tools. This can enable Claude to perform a much broader range of tasks, tailored to the user's or application's specific needs, further enhancing the versatility and usefulness of the AI assistant.
New York’s AI chatbot, MyCity, is doomed…
New York City is defending its new AI chatbot, MyCity, which has been caught giving business owners advice that would entail breaking the law.
📫️ The details:
The MyCity chatbot was launched in October 2023 as the first city-wide use of AI technology to provide "actionable and trusted information" to business owners.
However, the chatbot has been giving wrong answers, including advising employers to take a cut of their workers' tips and that there are no regulations requiring bosses to give notice of employee schedule changes.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams acknowledged that the chatbot is "wrong in some areas" and that it needs to be fixed, as it is still a pilot program.
🤔 Why it matters:
The issues with the MyCity chatbot highlight the challenges cities face in deploying AI technology, as the systems can sometimes provide incorrect or unlawful guidance. This raises concerns about the potential risks of relying on AI for government services and the need for robust testing and oversight
