FROM THE WEB

California Governor, Gavin Newsome vetos SB-1047

California Governor, Gavin Newsome, just vetoed an AI bill that was intended to hold model makers responsible for any catastrophic harm that came from use of the models.

This is a huge deal.

This means, for example, OpenAI wouldn’t be held responsible if someone where to use the tool to do harm.

This is a great move in our opinions. It should be the individual using the tool not the tool maker who gets held accountable.

But not everyone agrees.

Kat Woods, a Co-founder of Nonlinear an AI safety organization, said she is disappointed in this outcome because she feels majority of Californians were not listened to.

We understand that AI safety should be considered here.

But this bill in particular seems too heavy handed.

California is often the first state to dictate what happens in other states here in the US…

So the fact that Gavin vetoed the bill, means AI companies can continue to innovate without legal worry.
