ChatGPT's Big Brother

Plus using ChatGPT to roleplay

Welcome back, AI’ers!

Wednesday’s Top Story: We finally know why Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, was fired last year.

OpenAI's board of directors was unaware of the company's launch of ChatGPT in 2022 until they saw it on social media. Helen Toner, a former OpenAI board member, revealed this during a podcast interview.

She also stated:

“He gave us inaccurate information about the small number of formal safety processes that the company did have in place.”

“Sam didn't inform the board that he owned the OpenAI startup fund.”

As a reminder, employees threatened to quit after Altman's ouster, leading to his reinstatement.

But then Altman was brought back, and Toner and other board members then resigned from the board.

We’re sure more details will arise as time goes on.

TRENDING STORY

🤖 ChatGPT’s Big Brother

OpenAI announced the formation of a new safety committee to evaluate and improve its processes to ensure the safe development of AI systems. The nine-member committee includes CEO Sam Altman and other executives and will consult external experts.

This move comes after recent high-profile departures, including Jan Leike, who criticized OpenAI for underinvesting in crucial safety research as it prioritized product releases. The committee's first task over 90 days is to assess OpenAI's safeguards.

Additionally, OpenAI confirmed it has begun training its next large language model, which is succeeding GPT-4, which is expected to be substantially more capable and a step towards artificial general intelligence (AGI). Microsoft's cloud will power this more parameter-heavy "whale" model.

🔑 Key Details:

  • The committee led by Altman, other OpenAI directors and technical leads

  • Consulting former officials like ex-DOJ lead John Carlin

  • Leike and others left, criticizing the lack of safety prioritization

  • 90-day review of OpenAI's safety processes and safeguard

MORE DEVELOPMENTS

🤖 Jan Leike, a leading AI researcher who recently resigned from OpenAI, has joined rival AI company Anthropic to head up a new "superalignment" team focused on AI safety and security. Leike's team will work on scalable oversight, weak-to-strong generalization, and automated alignment research to help control and steer advanced AI systems.

😨 Facebook will soon use people's photos, posts, and other data to train its AI models without explicit consent. Users can opt out, but the process is complicated and requires submitting a request form. This move raises privacy concerns as people's personal information could be used to generate AI content without their knowledge.

QUICK TIP

Using ChatGPT to Roleplay

One of our favorite use cases for ChatGPT is roleplaying and getting different perspectives.

Here’s how to do it.

Use this prompt or a variation:

We are going to roleplay. You are a support agent of [business] and I am the customer.

[business] [business description]

Your job is to help me solve issues that my customer base may encounter. I am going to provide you with a problem to start the roleplay environment.

Do not start until I provide you with an issue my customer has.

After your response, include in your response how the response could have been improved. If there is no improvement needed, don't tell me and just continue with the roleplaying.

Remember, please ask me about the situation first before starting.

Then, turn it into a custom GPT that can be used across your teams for training and preparation.

Protip: Download all your customer interactions and upload them into the GPT so it knows how your customers think, giving better insights on how you can respond.

Doing this lets you prepare yourself or your team for the next customer interaction.

  AI in Google Sheets

Typically, we don’t like to share Twitter threads, but this one is good.

Google recently updated Google Sheets to incorporate Gemini.

This means that:

Gemini understands your data and suggests improvements, like transforming recurring data into dropdown chips.

You can automatically summarize your sheets and ask questions directly with a prompt.

Get step-by-step guides on processing your data or using specific functions.

Describe what you want to calculate, and Gemini creates the formula for you.

It’s pretty awesome.
