ChatGPT to launch search engine...

OpenAI appears to be developing its own search engine, potentially launching it as soon as May 9th, 2024. The company has registered the domain search.chatgpt.com and has been hiring for events staff, hinting at a major announcement. While the search engine may not directly challenge Google, it could provide an alternative search option powered by OpenAI's advanced language models.

📫️ The details:

  • OpenAI has registered the domain search.chatgpt.com, indicating it is working on a search functionality.

  • OpenAI has been hiring for in-house events staff and an events marketing manager, suggesting a major announcement is planned for May 2024.

  • The search engine is expected to be powered by OpenAI's technology, including its GPT language models, but may not directly compete with Google Search.

🧠 Our thoughts:

If ChatGPT launches a search engine, what happens to Perplexity? Google, anyone?

To be honest, ChatGPT has the resources and distribution to pull something like this off, and we’re excited to see it come to light.

Microsoft bans U.S. police departments from using enterprise AI tools…

Microsoft has banned U.S. police departments from using its Azure OpenAI Service, a managed enterprise-focused version of OpenAI's technologies, citing concerns over the use of generative AI and facial recognition by law enforcement.

📫️ The details:

  • The new terms of service prohibit integrations with Azure OpenAI Service from being used "by or for" police departments in the U.S., including OpenAI's text and speech analysis models.

  • The policy also explicitly bars the use of "real-time facial recognition technology" on mobile cameras like body cams and dashcams to identify people in uncontrolled environments.

  • This move comes after criticism over the use of AI-powered tools by law enforcement and follows similar bans by Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM on selling facial recognition software to police.

🧠 Our thoughts:

You know, we can't say we’re too surprised by Microsoft's decision here.

As AI capabilities have advanced, there's been a growing chorus of concern over how these powerful technologies could be misused, especially regarding law enforcement and issues of privacy and civil liberties.

At the same time, we can't help but wonder if this is just the tip of the iceberg. As AI continues to evolve, we'll see more and more of these ethical quandaries pop up.

Tech companies, lawmakers, and the public will have to grapple with some really thorny issues around privacy, bias, and the appropriate use of these technologies. It's not going to be easy, but it's a conversation we can't afford to shy away from.

ChatGPT is…dumb?

According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, GPT-4 is the "dumbest" AI model that humans will ever have to use, as future AI systems will be much more advanced.

Altman believes that each new generation of AI models, from GPT-5 to GPT-6 and beyond, will be significantly smarter than the previous ones. He is confident that OpenAI will continue to push the boundaries of AI capabilities, even if it requires significant investment.

📫️ The details:

  • Altman stated that "ChatGPT is like mildly embarrassing at best. GPT-4 is by far the dumbest model any of you will ever ever have to use again."

  • The CEO believes that there will be much more powerful AI systems in the coming years, saying with a high degree of scientific certainty that humanity will have more advanced models every year.

  • Altman did not provide a timeline for the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI), but he told MIT Technology Review that he believes there will be several versions of AGI that are more or less suitable for certain tasks.

🧠 Our thoughts:

Altman's bold claims about the future of AI suggest that OpenAI is poised to make rapid advancements in the field. His confidence in surpassing GPT-4 with even more capable models indicates that the company is committed to pushing the boundaries of what's possible with AI.

While the timeline for AGI remains uncertain, Altman's vision of AI becoming deeply integrated into our daily lives, taking on real-world tasks, is an intriguing prospect that could significantly impact how we work and live.

However, Altman's acknowledgment of the potential risks associated with powerful AI systems underscores the importance of responsible development and regulation to ensure these technologies are used for the benefit of humanity.
