TODAY’S TOP STORIES
💻 Apple's reported new smart home device will use its AI to help it catch up with Google
Apple is developing a high-end AI-powered wall-mounted tablet, code-named J490, set to launch as early as March 2024. The device aims to be a smart home control center with voice operation, FaceTime capabilities, and appliance control features, marking Apple's strategic entry into the smart home market dominated by Google and Amazon. With a potential price tag of up to $1,000, this square iPad-like device will integrate Apple Intelligence software, apps, and advanced sensing capabilities to detect nearby users.
The device will function as an intercom system and feature voice-first interaction through Siri, along with access to Apple Music and other Apple services.
It's priced significantly higher than competing devices like Amazon Echo and Google Nest Hub, which range from $100 to $230.
The system includes innovative presence-sensing technology to detect the number and proximity of people near the device.
🍪 Amazon ready to use its own AI chips, reduce its dependence on Nvidia
Amazon is set to launch its new 'Trainium 2' AI chips in December 2024, marking a significant move to reduce dependency on Nvidia while boosting its cloud computing capabilities.
The initiative, led by Amazon's Annapurna Labs division, aims to provide cost-effective alternatives for AI model training and has already attracted testing partnerships with companies like Anthropic, Databricks, and Deutsche Telekom.
This strategic development comes as Amazon's capital spending is projected to reach $75 billion in 2024, reflecting the company's substantial investment in AI infrastructure.
Amazon's Inferentia AI chips demonstrate 40% cost savings for AI model response generation, showcasing the potential economic benefits of their custom chip strategy.
The company is offering $110 million in cloud computing credits to researchers willing to use their proprietary AI chips, actively competing with Nvidia's dominant position.
The initiative is spearheaded by Annapurna Labs, acquired by Amazon in 2015 for $350 million, focusing on developing chips specifically optimized for AWS workloads.
🧑💻 AI Search Threatens Digital Economy
AI search engines are raising concerns about their potential impact on the digital economy, with researchers warning about disruption to content creators' revenue streams and traffic. Harvard researcher Benjamin Brooks highlights how AI search could shield websites behind chatbots, potentially depriving creators of vital visitor traffic and engagement.
The situation has prompted calls for the AI industry to proactively develop solutions for content compensation before government intervention becomes necessary.
Research suggests organic traffic could drop between 18-64% due to AI search engines providing direct answers rather than website links.
Major tech companies are making content deals with large publishers, potentially creating an unfair playing field for smaller creators.
Some experts argue this transformation could lead to more sophisticated monetization approaches, including content licensing and value-share systems.
