OpenAI and Anthropic will share their models with the US government

OpenAI and Anthropic will share their AI models with the U.S. government before public release to enhance safety and help identify potential risks. The companies signed agreements with the U.S. AI Safety Institute to provide access to major new models prior to and after their release.

  • This collaboration aims to assess safety concerns and mitigate issues associated with AI technology

  • The U.S. AI Safety Institute will provide feedback on potential safety improvements

  • These agreements come as AI companies face increasing regulatory scrutiny, with California recently passing a broad AI regulation bill

Ask Claude: Amazon turns to Anthropic's AI for Alexa revamp

Amazon is revamping Alexa with Anthropic's powerful Claude AI to create a more capable voice assistant called "Remarkable Alexa," set to launch in October for a monthly fee. The company turned to Claude after its own in-house AI models struggled to match the performance of modern chatbots like ChatGPT.

  • Amazon plans to charge $5 to $10 per month for Remarkable Alexa, while still offering the basic "Classic" Alexa for free.

  • Initial versions of the new Alexa using Amazon's own AI were slow to respond, taking up to 7 seconds to acknowledge prompts.

  • Remarkable Alexa aims to provide shopping advice, carry out complex requests, and act as a supercharged home automation hub.

Google develops GameNGen: World first AI model that predicts next frame of a live shooter game, playable at 20 fps

GameNGen is the first game engine powered entirely by a neural model, enabling real-time interaction with complex environments at high quality. It can interactively simulate the classic game DOOM at over 20 frames per second on a single TPU, with next frame prediction achieving a PSNR of 29.4, comparable to lossy JPEG compression. Human raters have difficulty distinguishing short clips of the actual game from the simulation

  • GameNGen is trained in two phases: an RL-agent learns to play the game with recorded training sessions, then a diffusion model is trained to produce the next frame based on past frames and actions

  • Conditioning augmentations enable stable auto-regressive generation over long trajectories

  • It achieves real-time performance of over 20 FPS on a single TPU while maintaining high visual quality
