Google Engineer Says Sam Altman-Led OpenAI Set Back AI Research Progress By 5-10 Years

A Google engineer has claimed that OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, has set back AI research progress by 5-10 years due to their approach with large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT.

  • The engineer argues that OpenAI's focus on developing impressive but narrow LLMs has diverted resources and attention away from more general and impactful AI research.

  • LLMs are seen as having limited real-world applications and successes, despite their impressive language abilities.

  • There are concerns that the hype around LLMs has created a misguided perception of the current state and potential of AI technology.

OpenAI’s Mira Murati fires back at Elon Musk for describing her company’s new partnership with Apple as “creepy spyware”

Mira Murati, OpenAI's Chief Technology Officer, defended the company's partnership with Apple to integrate its AI technology into iPhones, after Elon Musk described it as "creepy spyware".

Murati emphasized OpenAI's deep commitment to user privacy and safety, stating "We care deeply about the privacy of our users and the safety of our products." She also stressed OpenAI's transparency efforts to help stakeholders understand the technology properly.

  • Musk threatened to ban Apple devices at his companies due to the OpenAI integration, calling it an "unacceptable security violation".

  • Apple assured that user data won't be shared with OpenAI, and requests won't be stored by OpenAI with IP addresses obscured.

  • Murati said the "biggest risk is that stakeholders misunderstand the technology" and OpenAI is focused on being transparent.

U.S. is reportedly weighing further limits on China’s access to AI chip tech

The United States is considering imposing additional restrictions on China's access to advanced AI chip technology.

  • The Biden administration is weighing further limits on shipments of sophisticated semiconductors from U.S. companies to Chinese data centers that use these chips to develop AI models.

  • Companies in the U.S. seeking to sell advanced chips or chip-making equipment to China may need to notify the government or obtain special licenses.

  • The U.S. aims to prevent China from acquiring AI technology with potential military applications, such as guiding hypersonic missiles or deciphering codes.

Better AI Outputs

Ever felt frustrated when ChatGPT gives you a response that's way off the mark? Here's a common but flawed approach many take:

  1. <Prompt>

  2. <Bad response from ChatGPT>

  3. <No! Do this instead: prompt to fix 2>

Wrong, wrong, wrong. The AI didn't mess up; you did. It's a skill issue.

Trying to fix the conversation with step 3 is hard, if not impossible. Why?

Because the AI listens to itself, not just your commands.

When writing message 4, the LLM (Language Learning Model) will read, pattern match, and listen to the garbage in message 2. Unless step 3 is much longer than step 2, it will prefer matching step 2 again simply because there’s more text.

The Correct Way:

Edit Step 1 and/or regenerate Step 2.

You can’t let it veer off and try to steer it back.

That’s infinitely harder than going back a step and preventing the error in the first place.

ChatGPT has buttons that let you time travel in the conversation—use them. They’ve snuck a TON of capability in there.

Quick Steps to Fix ChatGPT Errors:

  1. Edit Your Original Prompt (Step 1): Make it clearer or more detailed.

  2. Regenerate the Response (Step 2): Use the built-in buttons to try a different angle.

Remember, it's easier to correct your initial input than to try and course-correct a conversation already off track.
